How to Use -아서/어서

- (to talk about the reason or cause of something)

- (connect related events in sequence)

 

1.) - because of/ due to

-아서/어서 ‘-아서/어서’ is attached to a verb or adjective root to indicate that the preceding clause is the cause of the following clause.
You can use ‘-아서’ when the root of a previous verb or adjective has ‘ㅏ’ or ‘ㅗ’ as the last vowel, and use ‘-어서’ for the other cases.
You cannot use ‘-았/었-‘, a past tense marker, when using ‘-아서/어서’.
(Although the action may have taken place in the past, you have to use the base form[present tense] of the verb.)
ex:
비가 와서 우산을 쓰고 갔어요.
(I used an umbrella because it rained.)
아침에 늦게 일어나서 늦었어요.
(I was late because I woke up late in the morning.)
너무 많이 먹어서 배가 아파요.
(My stomach is painful because I ate a lot.)
요즘 시간이 없어서 친구들을 만나지 못해요.
(Nowadays, I have no time to meet my friends)
(lit. translation = Nowadays, I can't meet my friends because I have no time.)
One exception is that ‘해서’ is used for ‘하다’.
ex:
열심히 공부를 해서 합격 했어요.
(I passed the exam because I studied hard.)
매일 운동을 해서 건강이 좋아졌어요.
(I became healthy because I ex)


2.) (~and then)
-아서/어서 ‘-아서/어서’, which is attached to a verb root, is used to connect related events in sequence.
ex:
길을 건너서 똑바로 가세요.
(Cross the street and then go straight.)
화장실에 가려면, 2층으로 올라가서 왼쪽으로 가세요.
(If you want to go to the bathroom, go to the 2nd floor and then turn left.)
  
나는 집에 빨리 가서 쉬고 싶어요.
(I want to go home and take a rest.)

Today we are going to talk about the pattern: V + 었다니/았다니/였다니 다행이다 This pattern is used with an action verb stem or descriptive verb stem.(ex: 먹다 - take off -다, 먹- is the verb stem where you will add the pattern ~었다니 다행이다. ) It is used next to the ending word of an action verb or descriptive action verb while the situation has solved the problem after the listener has heard the situation. It is a combination of ‘-다니’ which is expression for reason and evidence in indirect quotation with past verb form, ‘-었/았/였- and -었다니/았다니/였다니’ which is combined with word ‘다행이다'.   🍀   ‘-았다니 다행이다' is used if the last syllable of active verb or descriptive verb stem is ‘ㅏ,ㅗ' (ex: 지갑을 찾았다니 다행이네요. How to Use N+에 따라 (It depends on the+[noun]/depending on the +[noun])

Today, we will be talking about the expression: N+에 따라 (It depends upon the+[noun]/depending on the +[noun] )   ~에 따라 is always preceded by a noun. This kind of expression is used to talk(explain) about the changes and/or result of something depending on a certain atmosphere or situation.
